A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
